Featuring an eclectic lineup of guest vocalists, British electro duo Aaron Gilbert and Alex Payne, aka Cicada, attempt to build on the recent high profile they've attained via the Jessica Biel-fronted Revlon advert (which used 2009's Roulette album track "Don't Stare at the Sun") with their third studio album, Sunburst. Anyone reeled in by the ethereal techno that accompanied the Valentine's Day actress fluttering her eyelashes might be slightly disappointed to learn that it's something of a red herring, as the slightly alternative "revisited" version included here is the only track to pursue that sound. Instead, the critically acclaimed remixers have taken a Basement Jaxx-esque genre-hopping approach to the dancefloor, whether it's the ambient aquatic breakbeats of "Tokyo," the Franz Ferdinand-style new wave funk of "Hit My Ego" (which alongside the '80s-inspired title track sees Athlete's Joel Pott take a rare venture into floor-filling territory), or the Bollywood-tinged electro of "Magnetic." A beefed-up cover version of Frankie Knuckles and Jamie Principle's Chicago house classic "Your Love" (famous for its use in the Source's "You Got the Love") and the rubbery synth pop of "Fast Cars," which is given an almost hymnal quality thanks to Nick Valentino's haunting tones, get the pulses racing. But Sunburst is certainly more suited to soundtracking Ibiza sunrises than attempting to get the party started, and while the subtle melodies and indie disco production may not make much impact at first, it's a record that both continues to impress with each listen and proves that there's more to the pair than flogging mascara.
