Released in September 1995, Illusions is the third studio album by German gothic metal pioneers Crematory. Recorded at Commusication Studios and produced by Gerhard Magin alongside the band, this album marked a significant evolution in Crematory’s sound, blending atmospheric keyboards with heavy guitar riffs and a mix of death growls and clean vocals. The standout track, “Tears of Time,” became a defining hit, accompanied by a widely acclaimed music video that received substantial airplay on German music television channels like MTV and VIVA . Illusions not only solidified Crematory’s status in the gothic metal scene but also showcased their ability to merge dark, introspective themes with melodic and symphonic elements, influencing the genre’s direction in the mid-90s.
