Soft Machine’s penchant for building extended suites out of normal-sized compositions, both live and in the studio (as early as the Ayers Suite on their first album), reached its peak in the 1970 album Third, which was unusual for its time in that each of its four sides contained a suite. Third was also unusual because it remained on sale in the U.S. for more than ten years, and it is the best-selling Soft Machine recording.

They received unprecedented acclaim throughout Europe and made history by becoming the first rock band invited to play at the London Proms in August 1970. The performance was broadcast live on national television and was later released as a live album.
