Alongside The Drifters and The Coasters, The Platters were one of the most successful vocal bands of the 1950s R&B and Rock n Roll era. As with their two contempories, the group would, over the years go through many personnel changes but the two most famous line ups were the original group and followed by the most successful one! So it’s always good to give a shout out to the members of the group who are often forgotten particularly if a certain member becomes more successful in a later career such as Ben E King and Clyde McPhatter. The original line up from 1952-53 included Alex Hodge, Cornell Gunter, David Lynch, Joe Jefferson and Gaynel Hodge. The most successful line up included Tony Williams, Zola Taylor, Paul Robi, David Lynch and Herb Green. The Platters would have 40 Billboard charting singles from 1955-67 including four Number 1’s.
