Yusef Lateef was one of the first Afro-American jazz musicians to embrace the Islamic faith. Instrumentalist, composer and educator, although his main instruments were the tenor saxophone and the flute, he was known for his innovative blending of jazz with Asian music. In addition to the oboe and bassoon (which are both unusual in jazz), Lateef played various instruments, notably the bamboo flute shanai, shofar, argol, sarewa, and koto. The 1960 LP The Three Faces of Yusef Lateef, recorded in 1960 and presented here in its entirety, puts the emphasis precisely on the multiinstrumental nature of his playing.
