Like America itself, the story of Chess Records is a story of opportunity in new lands, where boundaries of race and culture were transcended to create rhythm and blues music that resonated with listeners worldwide. Chess’s impressive roster of artists—and its founders—have evolved and transformed the blues from folk music into a mainstream sound.

Founded in 1950 by Polish immigrants Leonard and Phil Chess in Chicago’s South Side, Chess Records’ influence is felt globally and across generations of popular music—from British Invasion acts like the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Eric Clapton, who cited Chess artists as influences, to today’s stars such as Beyoncé, Jack White, Questlove, and Bruce Springsteen.

In 2025, Chess Records will celebrate its 75th anniversary. To mark this historic milestone, Chess will launch a comprehensive anniversary series this October featuring a curated selection of audiophile vinyl reissues, beginning with Muddy Waters’ “The Best of Muddy Waters” and Howlin’ Wolf’s “Moanin’ in the Moonlight.”

The ongoing monthly series will showcase releases from legendary artists in the renowned Chess roster, including Chuck Berry’s “Berry Is on Top,” Etta James’ “At Last,” Little Walter’s “The Best of Little Walter,” and Sonny Boy Williamson II’s “The Real Folk Blues.”
